Wayne-Holmes NAIFA

When Wayne-Holmes NAIFA met April 8 at TJ’s restaurant in Wooster, featured speaker was Donald M. Graham of Donald M. Graham & Associates.

He spoke about how he markets his business and educated members on the different ways to advertise business. He also presented ideas on how to market current clients.

The next meeting will be May 13, 11:30 a.m., at TJ’s Restaurant. This will be the year-end meeting; current president Dean Streit will pass the gavel to incoming president Mark Hancock. New officers will be installed.

Valley College Grange

Valley College Grange members viewed a DVD of the Minnesota farm home of Granger founder Oliver Hudson Kelley when they met April 9. The farm has been restored as a working model for visitors to witness and take part in farming as it would have been in the late 1800s.

A letter of appreciation was read for the gift to the Salvation Army for Coats for Kids. Members voted on a monetary gift to Triway FFA in lieu of items for an auction.

The annual association meeting was held. Trustees to serve on the Holdings Committee were elected. They are: one year, Shirley Pittenger and Phil Bishop; two-year, Marilyn Cruit, Joanne Baker and David Crane.

The April 23 meeting will observe National Grange Week. All county Grangers are invited for a light supper at 6:30 p.m. State Master Gary Brumbaugh of Defiance plans to attend and speaker will be Charlotte Muenzenberger, farm editor of The Daily Record. Widow, Widower and Friends

When Widow, Widower and Friends held its monthly meeting at Creston United Methodist Church on April 6, Kathy Cain gave a talk on Goodwill Industries. Thank you notes were read from Christian Children’s Home of Ohio and Linda Porter.

Shirley Morse passed out senior health record books. New business was discussed.

Upcoming trips include the Mansfield Playhouse to see “The Wedding Singers” and the annual mystery trip. Call Rhea Schmale at 330-262-8037 if interested or for more details.

Helen Franks reported on illness of people in the group and sent cards.

The next dinner/business meeting will be held May 4 at 6 p.m. at Des Dutch Essenhaus in Shreve.

Friday Afternoon Duplicate Bridge Club

When Friday Afternoon Duplicate Bridge Club met at Wooster Community Center on April 9, 5 1/2 tables were in play; average was 54.

Pairs above average were: Louise Lanning and Kay Wagner, 66.38; Gale Metsker and George Durrant, 64.5; Olga Crawford and Jo McKee, 62.55; Fran Beyer and Wayne Leclear, 59.05; Gwen Gerber and Judy Martin, 57.38; and Roger Bucholtz and Gary Miller, 56.81.

Orrville Exchange Club

Lisa Todaro of the Wayne County Humane Society discussed the daily operations of the society and its relationships with dogs, cats and an occasional snake, when the Orrville Exchange Club met April 8 at the Orrville YMCA.

Women’s Committee for the Wooster Symphony Orchestra

When the Women’s Committee for the Wooster Symphony Orchestra met at the home of Catherine Webster on April 9, the death of Judy Nihlen, co-founder of the Women’s Committee in 1973, was discussed. She started the Music Ladies for the Children’s Concerts and previewed each concert on the radio.

Joyce Roe reviewed the children’s concert, held in March, where 1,371 students attended.

The group’s spring luncheon will be held April 30 at Wooster Country Club. At that time, the members will vote on the slate of officers for the next year. The orchestra’s final concert will be April 23 in McGaw Chapel on the College’s campus.

TOPS 1573

Awards Night for TOPS OH 1573 Nashville was held April 7 at Nashville United Methodist Church. A low calorie dinner was cooked and served by our leader, Jody Shaum and co-leader, Barb Shaum. A local business donated a gift certificate to purchase the food.

Laura Weaver was top weight loser and Martha Kuntz was second in weight loss for 2009. They each received a hanging basket. The following officers and helpers received flowers for their hard work: Jody Shaum, leader; Barb Shaum, co-leader; Ruth Evans, secretary; Geneva Pringle, treasurer. The three KOPS Tom Alexander, Lana Rush and Bob Gerber received awards for maintaining their goal weight last year. A floral gift was also given to those who do special projects, Jody Shaum, Bob Gerber and Janice Tope
